New York dominates Intel Science Talent Search — again

Thursday, January 15th, 2009 at 11:25 am by

Yesterday, the Intel Corporation announced the 300 semi-finalists in its nationwide Science Talent Search.  New York again dominated the competition, producing 114 winners, more than four times as many as the next closest state (California with 25).  My count is that over 100 of New York’s semi-finalists attend public schools.

Newsday notes that Long Island schools alone account for 59 on New York’s semi-finalists, with 56 attending public schools.

The Council has repeatedly noted that New York is home to some of the nation’s strongest public schools.  Our perennial domination of the Intel Science Talent Search is one piece of evidence.  Our public schools accounted for more than a third of the national semi-finalists last year as well.  Some states surpass us in results on national standardized tests, but it appears that few match us in providing exceptional learning opportunities for public school students.

Congratulations to the fifty-nine students from Nassau and Suffolk counties who were recently named National Intel Science Winners. Long Island is proud to have these students represent their schools, their communities and academia in our schools. What is very impressive is the number of Intel Science Winners that are involved in their school arts programs.

Among the winners this year are student musicians – several selected for All County and All State ensembles, a visual artist, and a winner and Honorable Mention designee in the Long Island Scholar Artist program. How impressive it was to read that one Intel Science winner’s research focused on the effects of Sinatra music on Alzheimer’s patients!

But, it should come as no surprise. Research shows that students involved in art and music programs score higher on standardized tests and in science and math. Students go on to careers not only in the arts, but into science, medicine, law and education.

Our arts programs are strongly supported by our communities, but what is alarming is the fact that the Governor’s budget – which seeks to cut major funding to education – will devastate them. I urge you to contact your local legislator as a tax payer and concerned citizen to make sure they know your feelings on arts education on Long Island and what we will lose.

The arts are a core subject area and essential for a complete education. They provide creative problem solving and time-management skills, self-confidence and teamwork. These skills are not only integrated into our arts programs, but are all needed for 21st Century employment.

Yes, students who are successful in the arts are successful in other areas of life, and will continue to be. Please remember that, Governor.
