REVISED: State unions agree to support pension Tier V to help avert layoffs; but TRS excluded

On Friday, Governor David Paterson and the two major state employee unions announced agreement on a plan to avert state layoffs.

The plan includes union support for a “Tier V” benefit level in state pensions for incoming workers.  But the Teachers Retirement System would not be covered by the agreement, and New York State United Teachers (NYSUT) continues to oppose a Tier V.

Questioning the tests: state math test gains provoking questions

Yesterday, the State Education Department released results for this year’s administration of grades 3 through mathematics assessments.  SED said the results showed “steady, measured gains across all grades.”
