SED receives Gates funding to support high school-college partnerships

The State Education Department is announcing that it has received $6 million from the Bill and Melinda Gates Foundation to establish a network of “early college high schools” across the state.

SED advises, “The goal is to systemically create early college high school partnerships through which students will have an opportunity to take an accelerated program of study to complete a high school diploma while earning college credits.”  Also, “A typical award may range from $300,000 to $500,000, contingent on the number of successful applicants.”  The Department anticipates awarding approximately 11 grants.

The program will seek to support students who traditionally attend college at disproportionally low rates to succeed in high school and college.

Grants will be made to partnerships consisting of institutions of higher education and public schools (especially those serving students in high need/very high need schools), charter schools, and Boards of Cooperative Educational Services (BOCES).

A bidders conference will be conducted by Webinar next week (Thursday, August 13, 2009, from 10:00 AM until 12:00 PM).  Register by sending an email to:  SMARTSCHOLARSRFP@mail.nysed.gov.

The New York Post reports that Governor Paterson will seek matching state funds in next year’s state budget.  This would permit another round of awards to be made.
